Basic Allowance for Housing or BAH, is a housing allowance provided to U.S. military personnel, who will not live in government quarters (on-base housing), so they may provide for their families. The amount of BAH is determined by geographic duty location, pay grade, and number and status of dependents within the home. It provides uniformed Service members equitable housing compensation based on housing costs in local civilian housing markets within the United States when government quarters are not provided.
